Koliber – multi-system radiotelephone for train network of Polish National Railway (PKP).


Intended Use

 
Radiotelephone „Koliber” is a modern technological solution, designed especially to meet the needs of Polish National Railway (PKP), used for radio communication in train network.

The device can work as mobile set to be installed in the locomotive cabs of all types and in other railway transport vehicles used by Polish National Railway (PKP). Stationary set is devised to work as base station at railroad traffic control posts. The device ensures radiotelephone connections within the scope of train radiotelephone network operating in VHF band  (136-174 MHz) and in GSM network.

“Koliber” guarantees the users of radiotelephone network  smooth and convenient communication within the already existing network structure, with application of already used ways and methods of communication. It ensures radiotelephone connections with the use of pulse signaling  (Zew 1, Zew 2, Zew 3), used by Polish National Railway (PKP). It  transmits and receives alarm signals    (Auto Stop) and ensures voice transmission. Taking into consideration technical and functional development of modern radiotelephone networks “Koliber” ensures implementation of more advanced functions and options available in radiotelephone networks. It especially allows to implement Selcall functions, CT CSS/DCS coding, data transmission GPS, and co-operation with computer applications.

The construction of the radiotelephone and technological solutions used make it possible to use the manipulator of our device in order to operate transmitting-receiving modules of GSM-R standard – the technical solution which Polish National Railway PKP plans to introduce in the future. Apart from obvious economic benefits, the device presented makes operation of radio-communication devices by the motormen and railway traffic controllers at stationary posts much easier.

The intent of our constructors was to prepare such a solution which would cater for present needs of its users but also ensure proper functioning of the devices in the period of network modernization and in case of implementation of new communication standards.

Our device constitutes such a solution.



Technology applied

The device offered by Radionika Sp. z o.o.  is a modern product, made with the help of the currently used designing tools, implementing modern technologies and solutions from the field of professional electronics.

Mechanics of the construction

Mechanics of the device as well as its shape and form were designed  with the use of solid modeling technique and computer aided design programs (CAD). This technology ensures high quality and precision in production of casing elements, enables to maintain exact project guidelines (overall dimensions limits, fixing, tightness of casing etc.), guaranteeing proper adjustment of all the elements of the devices, their mutual location and cooperation. This technology also assures high level of repeatability and quality of particular production batches. It also should be mentioned that the technology applied made it possible to prepare a device which is highly ergonomic and aesthetic.

Mechanical construction of casings is made of steel  with protective coats.  The construction is of  box type, it is riveted and screwed, thus its proper stiffness and  durability is ensured.

Additionally, outer casing elements are made of highly percussive ABS plastics which ensure proper aesthetics and ergonomics  of the device

Electronics

The device has been constructed with the use of modern microprocessor technology, ensuring high functionality combined with adaptability and stability of technical parameters. Technology applied made is possible to construct a device using world standards of communication and transmission. The construction of steering part has been based on microprocessor architecture - RISC processor mainly (Harvard architecture, ISP function, bootloader, integrated peripheral systems, C programming language).

Programmable logic arrays Xilinx FPGA were used together with specialized systems of data transmission signalization.  The device is made with the use of surface-mount technology  (SMT) which guarantees stability of work and durability of solutions.

Compatibility of the device with already existing systems.

The device in offer guarantees full compatibility with assembly and addition conditions already existing in rail vehicles and stationary units. Overall dimensions of the device and the solutions implemented allow for quick assembly and activation of the device with the use of already existing wiring system and assembly jigs.  

 
Compatibility of the device with formal requirements.  

Radiotelephone ‘’Koliber” fulfills requirements and provisions listed in the following documents describing standards of usage of such devices: 

  • Technical and operational requirements for train and station radiotelephone used by Polish National Railway (PKP).
  • Instruction E-36 (Instrukcja E-36) on organization and exploitation of radiotelephone networks in state –owned company Polish National Railway  (PKP).  
  • Instruction R-12 (Instrukcja R-12) on exploitation of train radio-contact devices at Polish National Railway  PKP.  
  • Requirements  of  URT (Office of Telecommunication Regulation) concerning exploitation of sending-receiving devices in radiotelephone networks. The device has got „Certificate of conformity” no. 089/2003 which authorizes its use in radio networks in Poland.
  • Operation acceptance certificate  GIK no 089/2003 issued on 09.05.2003r.

Functionality.

One of the most important construction aims was to obtain maximum functionality with simplicity of construction. Use of technology described above allowed for implementation of the following functional solutions in the radiotelephone:

1. Function of broadcasting and receiving audio signals

2. Broadcasting and receiving of Polish National Railway (PKP) special signals:   Zew1, Zew3.

3. Radio-Stop Function.

4. Text message sending.

5. Data transmission.

6. Black box function (recording of events and audio signals).

7. Solutions using  GPS system.

8. Modern system of user identification.

9. Time synchronization on the basis of GPS signal (DCF in stationary version).

10. Solutions ensuring full remote communication with the device.

11. Adjustable configuration of operator console parameters (programmable function keys, intuitive menu etc).

12. Possibility of console cooperation  with other  broadcasting and receiving  module, for example  GSM/GSM-R.

13.  Universal construction  (one device to work in mobile and stationary version).

14. One type of feeder cable to work in all types of locomotives (broad range of imput voltages).

15. Durability and mechanical resistance of the construction.

16. Easy maintenance.

17.  Repeatability of construction elements. 

18. Use of the devices in construction of  remote control radio-communication networks at Polish National Railway  (PKP).

19. Use of the devices in construction of radio-communication steering devices for  low-load lines.

 Description of manipulator module KM-01.

Manipulator module KM - 01.

Manipulator is the main interface of radiotelephone user. Terminal constitutes of the following main elements:

  • Graphic, backlit display LCD 64 x 240 pixel
  • Backlit alarm key
  • Backlit, silicone numerical keyboard
  • Backlit, silicone function keyboard
  • Set of  signaling diodes
  • Audio speaker
  • Hand microphone with push to talk function.


The main functional parameters of the manipulator

  • presentation of the states of device on graphic display
  • programmable,  intutitive  function keys
  • use of one manipulator to steer a few broadcasting- receiving modules
  • possibility to listen to black- box recordings on the spot
  • casing prepared to be built into traffic controler’s panel

Description of  terminal module KT-01

Steering interface constitutes the main element of radio module apart from VHF broadcasting-receiving device. In this part of the device there is also a pocket for Flash Memory Card where all the conversations are recorded together with history of service and events. The card functions as radiotelephone’s black-box.

Module is equipped with GPS signal receiver.

This maintenance free module is fully controlled and programmed from the  terminal. Its proper work is signaled by three LED diodes placed in the front panel. Construction of the casing makes it possible to install this module in the train and also in any place in a building or on an aerial mast.

Description of converter module KT-01

For mobile version of the radiotelephone our company offers high quality converter module with very broad scope of input voltages (15 – 220V DC). Mechanical construction of power supply module is similar to the construction of radio module. Most casing elements are identical for both of the constructions. The general appearance of the modules is also very similar.

Description of distribution frame module KPG-01 GSM/GPRS


Moduł przełącznicy KPG-01 GSM/GPRS.

 
Distribution frame module KPG-01 GSM/GPRS in two-cab locomotives allows for automatic  switch of the device between cab A and B. Accumulator supports work of GSM and GPS even when radiotelephone is switched off.
